GL-18AD Front Loading Glass Kiln
The GL18AD digital kiln is 13” high inside with room to bend glass for curved windows or cabinet doors and to repair lampshades. Make glass-fused platters. Crack the door to rake or emboss designs in the surface. Make small-to-medium sized castings and pâte de verre.
Engineered for Reliability
Paragon’s GL-series are made for years of rigorous firing, as artists all over America can attest. The insulating firebrick, wrapped in heavy-gauge steel, soak up heat for slow, efficient cooling of the glass. A double heat shield and air gap between the kiln and ventilated switch box help keep electrical components cool for long, trouble-free service. Costly heavy-gauge nickel-plated copper wiring is covered with high temperature glass-braided insulation. The thermocouple, which senses temperature inside the kiln, is protected with a high-nickel stainless steel sheath for long life.
Dual Mechanical Relays
The GL18AD has dual mechanical relays for extra reliability. They send power to the elements on command from the digital controller. Two relays last longer than the single relay of competitive kilns because of the reduced amperage going through each relay.
Optional Deluxe Mercury Relays
Relays turn on the kiln’s heating elements. Order your new kiln with the quiet, reliable mercury relay instead of the standard mechanical relays. The life of a mercury relay has been measured in millions of on/off cycles. The mercury relay far outlasts the standard mechanical relays and is optional on the GL-18AD.
Pinless Element Groove
The GL-series lid elements are mounted in pinless element grooves. Pins are unnecessary because the element coils are wider than the groove opening. Wires are fastened to the elements with heat-dissipating connectors refined and proven over many years in Paragon kilns.
The spring-pressure door latch and a ½" recess around the edge of the firebrick door keep the door tightly closed. The door remains rock-steady on a heavy hinge shaft. Four hand lifts aid moving. The base is open in the back and slotted to dissipate heat.
Optional 2"x2" View Window
Watch the bright red kiln interior through the optional 2” x 2” high-temperature glass window. (Note: always wear firing safety glasses when viewing the kiln interior. The kiln may not reach its maximum temperature and may fire a little slower when equipped with the window.) The glass window is guaranteed up to 2300°F.
The window is especially useful for glass fusing and copper enameling. Conveniently watch your glass treasures progress through every stage from tack fuse to full fuse.
The Furniture Kit
1 - C-19 Shelf (17” x 17” x 5/8”)
4 – 1/2” long, 1” wide Square Posts
1 lb. Bag Glass Separator
Shipping size: 24” long x 24” wide x 9” high
Glass is fired in the kiln on a shelf. Coat the shelf with glass separator to prevent the glass from sticking to the shelf. Place short posts between the shelf and the kiln bottom to circulate heat around the shelf.
Paragon’s durable cordierite shelves resist warpage and thermal shock. They are volume-stable.Optional Ceramic Fiber Top
This kiln comes with an insulating firebrick top. You can also upgrade your kiln with the optional deluxe ceramic fiber top, which has the same type of pinless groove as the standard top. The fiber top helps keep the kiln interior even cleaner.
Watch the red-hot glass through two tapered peepholes, drilled one above the other in the wall opposite the switch box. The peepholes are hardened and sealed with a special refractory coating to help protect the glass from dust. Peephole plugs are included. (Most GL-18 models are drilled for peepholes. However, some international models have no peepholes.
You can also order an optional 2” x 2” glass window for your kiln. The window is rated to 2300°F (1260°C), so it can easily withstand glass fusing temperatures.
The Convenience of Digital Firing
You will be amazed at the convenience of digital firing.
Paragon’s innovative controller will help you achieve consistent results from one firing to the next. The controller has powerful features that you will enjoy using. Yet we have also worked hard to make the controller user-friendly.
You may want to upgrade to the new Sentinel Touch Controller by Bartlett. Please select that option in cart if desired.
Do you ever wonder how much electricity your kiln uses? The digital controller can figure this for you with the press of a button. Find out how little a kiln actually costs to fire.
The electronic circuit board can be removed in minutes for upgrade or repair. The board is the heart of the digital kiln and is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.
Designed for production
Paragon’s warranty is not affected by frequency of use. Fire your new kiln every day if you want, even in commercial settings. That will have no effect on the warranty period.
