The Janus Dragon is an industrial furnace that fires both pottery and glass. And considering its features, it is surprisingly affordable.

The Janus Dragon exudes power. Its 16,800 watts heat the 24” wide, 24” deep, 27” high interior to cone 10 with ample power to spare. Dropped, recessed grooves seat industrial-gauge wall and roof elements. (You can even order the optional door elements.)

Select between glass and pottery with the flip of a switch. With the switch in the glass position, heat comes from the top elements and the middle sidewall element. With the switch in the pottery position, heat comes from only the sidewall elements.

In the glass mode, fuse and sag large glass projects placed on a single shelf. In the pottery mode, fire to cone 10. You can also fire several shelves of smaller glass pieces using the pottery mode.

The Furniture Kit (Optional, but recommended)

The furniture kit consists of carefully selected fireclay shelves and posts for this particular model. When estimating the price of the kiln, include the cost of furniture. The furniture allows you to stack multiple layers of ware. Without it, you could fire only the ware that would fit on the kiln bottom.

Dragon Furniture Kit

1 C-30 Shelf (22" x 22")

4 - C30H ½ Shelf (22" x 11")

1½” wide Square Posts, 8 each of -

4”, 6”, 8” lengths

1 lb. Bag Kiln Wash

Optional Orton VentMaster Kiln Vent (Optional, but may be required.  Check local codes, or assess your use situation)

The patented Orton Vent Master not only vents fumes but also improves firing results. At this price, the vent is factory-installed onto the back of the kiln.

It pulls fresh oxygen into the kiln for brighter colors, especially noticeable with red and orange glazes and decals. Fire red and green glazes in the same load without glaze contamination. The Vent Master draws air from the kiln, dilutes it with room air, and pushes it outdoors through a vent hose.

The extra oxygen and increased air movement help burn carbon out of the clay, which helps eliminate a host of firing problems: bloating, dark patches in the clay, porcelain mildew, pinholes, pitting, blisters, and bubbles.

The Vent Master removes fumes containing volatile metals, fluorides and sulphur oxides. You can fire even lusters, decals, metallics, and pate-de-verre glass without strong odor.

The elements in the roof are mounted in a firebrick “ball” groove that eliminates element pins. The element coils are wider than the groove opening, so the elements stay in place without pins. The groove dissipates heat efficiently.

Extra insulation saves energy. The 4” thick walls, top and door are made of 3” firebrick backed by 1” of ceramic fiber block insulation. The floor is 4 ½” thick firebrick. The extra insulation not only saves energy but also cools slowly. This gives the micro-crystalline structure and color of the glaze sufficient time for full development.

The ventilated switch box is generously louvered for air circulation for the long life of the electrical components. Yet dust is kept to a minimum. Hinged at the bottom, the switch box opens wide for easy maintenance. Open the box in seconds by merely removing two screws at the top. A folding support arm holds the box in the open position. There is plenty of working space around electrical components.

Long-lasting mercury relays power the elements. A bank of built-in NEC/UL compliant high-amperage fuses protects the kiln and circuit wiring. Potters who struggle with top-loading kilns will enjoy the Janus Dragon. The door swings open wide on a heavy ¾” steel rod with sealed bearings. Two spring-loaded latches press the door tightly closed.

Optional Stands

The optional stands are super heavy duty to support the 900 pound Dragon.  The stand can be shipped as a separate unit, or attached to the kiln at the Factory.  We will verify your preference after your purchase.

Doorway Clearance

The Janus Dragon will fit through a 34” doorway if the handles and back element cover are temporarily removed.
